A Surgical Instrument is a tool or device used during a surgery or operation to perform specific actions or achieve desired results, such as modifying biological tissue or providing access for viewing it. Many different types of tools have been develop over time.
Some tools are intended for general use in all types of surgeries, while others are intended for specific specialties or procedures. As a result; surgical instrument nomenclature follows certain patterns, such as a description of the action it performs (for example, scalpel, hemostat); the name of its inventor(s) (for example, the Kocher forceps), or a compound scientific name related to the type of surgery (for example, a tracheotome is a tool use to perform a tracheotomy).
The term surgical instrumentation is sometimes use interchangeably, but their meaning in medical jargon is the activity of a specialized professional, usually a surgical technologist, but sometimes a nurse or radiographer, assisting a surgeon with the proper handling of surgical instruments during an operation.
